Ski Jobs - Job Profiles

The profiles below give an overview on the types of jobs available at ski resorts. Working hours will vary but most positions will involve working 6 days per week. Daily working hours will vary according to the job role - for example chalet hosts will often have time off in the afternoons whereas childcare staff will have most evenings free. For specific job descriptions with individual companies click on the links within the employer profile section below.

Ski Reps
Ski Reps work as the first point of contact for holiday guests, dealing with all aspects of their holiday as the daily representative of the tour operator. You will probably be expected to visit guests every day at their chalet or hotel. Responsibilities may include airport transfers, organising ski passes and equipment hire, ski guiding, resort admin, organization of apres-ski activities, ski servicing, snow clearing, repairs, driving and maintenance work.

Ski Instructors / Snowboard Instructors
Ski Instructors may be employed directly by a holiday company, but most work for a resort-based ski or snowboard school. An internationally recognised snowsport teaching qualification is an essential requirement. For details on BASI Snowsport qualifications click here.

Ski Guides / Ski Hosts
Ski Guides or Ski Hosts are employed by holiday companies to provide a safe and enjoyable skiing experience for all levels of skiers (on piste only). This may include accompanying guests to and from the hotel, booking lunch in mountain restaurants, and providing good local knowledge of the ski area. The role may also include organising lift passes and ski hire.

Chalet Hosts / Chalet Assistants
Chalet Hosts and Chalet Assistants are employed to take responsibility for all aspects of looking after guests in a catered chalet. This may involve everything from cleaning, washing up, making beds, laundry, buying food at the local supermarket, serving food, cooking or assisting a chalet cook with daily breakfasts and evening meals.

Chefs
There are opportunities for qualified chefs at hotels and restaurants. Positions available range from Head Chefs to Pizza Chefs. Head Chefs may have responsibility for all aspects of staff management, maintaining accurate accounts, menu planning, ordering, stocktaking and budget control. Other chef roles available include Chef de Partie, Sous Chef, Pastry Chef, Commis Chef and Pizza Chef.

Catering Assistants
There are positions available at larger hotels and restaurants for non-qualified staff to assist with food preparation, washing up after meals, cleaning work in the kitchen and checking of deliveries.

Childcare staff / Nannies
There are opportunities for qualified Nannies / Nursery staff (NNEB or equivalent qualification) to provide childcare within resort-based nurseries, creches and children's clubs. This may involve working with children aged between 6 months to 5 years. If you have childcare experience but lack formal qualifications there are some opportunities to work at children's clubs for 5-12 year olds and/or assist qualified nursery staff with childcare programmes for under 5's.

Accountants
Resort Accountants are required to take responsibility for duties such as bookkeeping, petty cash, dealing with local suppliers, cash control, cash flow analysis, cash forecasting, financial reporting and stock control. This role may be combined with secretarial & reception duties.

Customer Service / Reception Staff
Customer service positions are available at resort hotels. These positions may combine reception duties with other admin or secretarial duties in and around the resort.

Bar Staff
Positions available at resort hotels, night clubs, bars and restaurants. As well as serving drinks you will also be required to maintain stocks, clean and tidy the bar area. Previous relevant bar experience essential.

Drivers
Drivers are employed to drive guests on airport transfers and around the resort. They are often the first point of contact for the guests and will be required to provide a high standard of customer service. The role may also be combined with other duties within the resort such as maintenance or assisting with arranging ski passes / ski hire for guests. A full clean driving licence is essential.

Handyperson / Maintenance Staff
These positions are suitable for people with previous experience or qualifications in carpentry, plumbing, painting and decorating or electrics. As well as general maintenance and repairs to buildings you may also be required to assist with driving or stock control duties.

Hotel Managers
Some tour operators take over resort hotels for the entire season and employ their own Hotel Manager to take responsibility for management of the hotel staff team. Additional responsibilities will usually include stock ordering, stock control, health & safety, bar, restaurant, housekeeping and administrative functions.

Restaurant Managers
Experienced Restaurant Managers are employed to take responsibility for all aspects of restaurant management, stock control and staff management.

Resort Managers
This role varies according to the size of the resort and the type of company. Duties will normally include: management of resort staff and properties, organisation of and participation in client transfers, ski packs, après ski and ski programmes, dealing with suppliers, customer service and financial management. This role may be combined with additional resort rep / ski host duties.
