  • Duration

We are looking for a commitment at least until the end of September.

We offer a competitive salary plus training grants, which staff may use to fund courses such as the Wilderness First Responder. For full-time permanent staff members, we also offer an equipment allowance to contribute towards necessary work equipment such

As a Senior guide, your primary responsibilities, besides the safety and enjoyment of our guests while leading them through (easy to moderate) glacial terrain, are supervising the operations on daily basis, supervising the guides at work, making sure everything run smooth. The most important aspect is that you will be the emergency response personnel.

You will be provided with full training followed by formal assessment prior to leading tours independently. We offer tours ranging from easy and family friendly hikes to more demanding activities such as ice climbing.

The guide position is physically demanding! An average workday typically amounts to 10 hours, often in challenging weather conditions. As a guide, you can expect to lead multiple departures throughout the day in addition to taking care of track maintenance duties on the glacier (under supervision of a more senior guide.)
Working with tourists from all over the world in a dynamic environment means no two days are the same and constantly adapting to changing conditions is therefore an integral part of the job.

For many people, visiting the country ranks high on their bucket list and the reasons are obvious.

We encourage our staff to explore the island and learn more about the history and nature of Iceland- our clients appreciate a knowledgeable guide! That said, it is important to understand that working in a busy tourism industry during peak travel season can be demanding.

•We ask for a minimum commitment of 6 months from new recruits. Beyond 6 months we are very happy to discuss longer term employment, or returning to work with us the following season. Unfortunately we cannot accommodate bespoke length contracts (less than 6 months).
•New recruits are responsible for organizing and funding their own travel to Iceland. A designated meeting location/time will be provided to successful applicants- this is typically in the downtown Reykjavik area the day before the position start date.
•We provide a work uniform, however guides are responsible for providing their own suitable boots and a backpack. We recommend picking these up before arrival in Iceland if you do not already own these items.

We work in two outstanding locations:
The beautiful Vatnajökull National Park. The park is the largest National Park within Iceland and offers endless opportunities to explore. In the winter, ice climbing both on waterfalls and the many glaciers is an option and when the snow falls ski touring here is great. In the summer time the park offers lots of spectacular hiking and Iceland’s prime rock climbing location. We may be living in the middle of nowhere, but for the outdoor enthusiast it is a fantastic playground!
The mighty Sólheimajökull glacier, the jewel in the crown of the Icelandic south coast - a mystic area where stunning waterfalls, the world-famous black sand beach, and the majestic Thórsmörk valley are only few of the otherworldly landscapes surrounding our beloved ice-tongue. Right halfway between the vibrant city of Reykjavik and our glacier, it is placed Hvolsvöllur (/Kv-ols-voetl-ür/). A small town that we have made our home. Here our staff live together sharing two houses. In the shadow of Hekla, Tindfjallajökull and Eyjafjallajökull, the town is the perfect base camp for those seeking lots of adventures, but with its relaxed vibes Hvolsvöllur is great to just chill after work.

We have a number of dedicated staff bases available for our team of guides, drivers and office staff. Each base has the essentials- laundry, bathroom, kitchen and dining facilities as well as communal living areas. WiFi is provided! Food is ordered regularly at a very convenient fee and staff have access to it at all times.
The most obvious thing to consider is that our bases are shared facilities- you absolutely must be comfortable with the idea of sharing your living space with others.
